I am always asked about hat sizes...and it's a valid question! Most people have no idea what the size of their head is...or how to read hat size. I constantly see people selling hats with rulers placed over the opening showing width and length. WRONG!! You would have to be a mathemetician to figure out the circumference of an elipse shape using straight lines!
The diagram to the right shows you how to measure your head for a hat.
Or....if you have a hat that fits you well, you can easily tape or pin a tape measure around the inside circumference. That is your size in inches or centimeters, a popular measurement for hats. For most western hats, there will be a size between 6 7/8 to 7 7/8 and more...but let's start there.
To the left are the sizes that you will come across in your search for the perfect hat. I tend to stay in the 7-7 3/8 range, and then I replace the original sweatband (the inside band) with an adjustable one so my hats are more accessible. Because my hats are reshaped, dyed and distressed by hand, absolute duplication is impossible...however, I can often come pretty close! One of the reasons I do NOT do commissions is because it's challenging to meet expectations of someone who already has a picture in their mind. I prefer to take suggestions for a design, do my version of it (if I'm so inclined) and then make it available in my Etsy store. That way, if you like it, great! If it's not what you were picturing, that's fine! Someone will like it. No pressure for either of us!
